A year can never go by without welcome visit from "Grandpa Jack" of Georgia. Grandpa Jack has been a long time treasure hunter starting 39 years ago while living in New York City. Famous treasure hunter and writer Carl Von Mueller is credited with bringing Jack into the treasure hunting hobby. Early treasure hunting took place under the famous Coney Island Boardwalk where people would sift for coins and jewelry using homemade sifters of window screens in a wooden frame. Grandpa Jack knew that a treasure detector could do better than a sifter and purchased a war surplus mine detector for $50.00. Weighing a giant 26 pounds did not deter him from accumulating well over 50,000 coins!

Grandpa Jack has owned a large number of metal detectors of various makes and models, the oldest being a Metrotech. Here at Kellyco, we know its summer when our friends from Nova Scotia Len and Shirl come through our showroom door. Metal detecting is a family hobby that began 6 years ago when Shirl hit upon an idea that would finally get Len out of his fishing boat (which was always on the water) to the beach where they both could enjoy a new hobby, metal detecting for treasure.

"Len and I together built a treasure chest to store our finds. I thought it would be small but the way it ended, we had a real large treasure chest 2 feet long, 1 foot wide, and 1 foot high, that's real big! Right now, because of the amount of coins we have put into our treasure chest, the chest is too heavy for us to lift and we only have it filled a few inches from the bottom! Our average coin finds each year are in excess of 3,000! Last year (2001), we found over 5,700 coins. The year before (2000), we found over 3,700 coins. Our average coin finds in Florida alone exceeds 3,000 each year. Rings, and there are plenty of them, do not go into the treasure chest. Since all of my fingers have rings and spares (just to change the look), my grandchildren manage to capture quite a few, and I love them to have the rings they want since my Excalibur finds more rings everyday.
