Months of "Winter" Detecting
Last
November, when we got our first snow of the year, I figured
that winter was upon us and detecting was over for the year.
So, I removed the batteries
from my detectors and cleaned them up for the winter. A couple
weeks later, the weather warmed up a bit to give us a few
days in the "bonus round". Since the snow had kept
the ground from freezing, I decided to give it another shot
while the warm temperatures held.
I
had been "admiring" a couple old yards here in town,
and easily received permission to hunt them. Both
yards contained a lot of old coins and several nice pieces
of jewelry. As I have done the past 33 years, I placed those
finds in a plastic bag, labeled them with the date, location
and detector used for the hunt. I managed to hunt several
more times over the course of December, until the January
weather made it impossible to dig. January and February proved
to be "typical winter" and I spent quite a bit of
time researching areas to hunt once the ground thawed and
the temperatures climbed. March was mild and I was able to
get out to a few of my favorite spots as well as a couple
that my brother and I had researched recently.
Long story short.....the
past couple days here have been rainy and unfit to hunt.
Last night, the wife said it was time to clean that "stuff"
off of the kitchen counter. As I was sorting through the bags
of finds for the past 6 months, I was surprised at the number
of old coins I had actually found. Here is a picture of the
finds that I made with my Minelabs since the last week of
November, 2004. A short six months, interrupted with 8 weeks
of cold temperatures. In addition to the bucket of trash,
a pint jar of newer coins and a few odds and ends, I managed
to find 167 Wheat cents, 5 Buffalo nickels, 18 V nickels,
2 silver nickels, 59 Indian cents, 1 Seated Liberty dime,
10 Barber dimes, 22 Mercury dimes, 14 silver Roosevelt dimes,
an 1894 CDN dime, 2 Washington quarters, 1 Standing Liberty
quarter, 1 Barber Quarter, a Franklin half and two Barber
halves. In addition to the coins, I also found 22
rings (of which 7 are gold) and a dozen other brooches,
pins and pieces of assorted jewelry. All the targets were
found in old picnic grounds, country school yards, private
yards and parks. And, all were found with my Minelabs.

As
I said, I have been detecting for over 30 years and have found
lots of coins and jewelry. But this past 6 months
have been extraordinarily kind to me and I wanted to share
this story with you. Thanks to Minelab for building the best
detectors on the market and to Kellyco for making them affordable.
