1680 El Salvador y San Jose "8 Reale" Silver Coin

1654 Silver Coin"El Salvador y San Jose" was a Spanish merchantman sailing from Lima, Peru to Guayaquil, Ecuador in August 1680 when she struck the rocky sand bank called "EL Burro" adjacent to the island of Santa Clara 20 miles off the coast of Ecuador. She sank very quickly, scattering her cargo across the reefs, including a shipment of 100,000 pesos in silver cobs from the Potosi mint.

In 1977 salvage divers located the scatter pattern of the wreck-site, recovering a number of the silver coins from pot holes and fissures in the reefs. This coin is one of the coins recovered during that salvage operation and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. (All coins are Sea Salvaged and have some wear and oxidation from the ocean. Details and strike placement will vary as each one is unique and there are no two exactly alike) We only have 2 available.

Silver Spanish Pieces of Eight!

Spanish "Pieces of Eight" Real's are a beach combers dream and considered highly sought after treasure. Unfortunately, only so many exist and still scatter the beaches to be found. Kellyco has a limited quantity of these unique Spanish Reals, mounted as a pendant in a silver, contoured bezel with a silver crown, available for the holiday season.

Each Real is unique due to the unusual way they were made. Molds for these coins were irregular at best and the King's assayer would clip the edges to ensure they met weight requirements. This means that there is no other coin in the world like the ones we sell – that you can own or gift to a loved one.

The story behind these Real's is well-known and documented. The El Salvador y San Jose, a Spanish merchant ship in route from Lima, Peru to Guayaquil, Ecuador, struck a rocky bank in August 1680 and sank adjacent to the island of Santa Clara. Located 20 miles from the coast of Ecuador the ship sank very quickly, scattering cargo across the reefs that included these silver coins.

In 1997 salvage divers located the scatter pattern of the ship's wreck site and recovered a number of the silver coins from pot holes and fissures in the reefs. This story is retold on the certificate of authenticity with the date the coin was made, the denomination, and the mint it was made at.

Each coin comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the salvager, and Kellyco proudly offers a 10 day, money back guarantee for each coin pendant. Four different crown styles are available: Pirate, Sailfish, and two Dolphins – either jumping right or left.
