Metal Detectors Super Store

As most of my customers know, I am always looking for metal detectors that are easy-to-tune as well as easy-to-use and have the ability of being able to use in parks, playgrounds, and beaches.  I was pleased when I was offered the opportunity to field test Garrett's GTAx 550, it seemed to fit my requirements for the "perfect" metal detector.

The GTAx 550 is a high-tech metal detector for people like myself who do not want to fool with lots of dials, knobs, etc. It is a simple turn-on-and-go detector. It is defiantly user friendly and has a large amount of automatic features that compare favorably to many higher priced detectors. The GTAx 550 is micro-processor controlled with automatic ground balancing which means it can be used on mineralized ground and salt water beaches. The meter display also delivers a lot of information. It will indicate and identify a target under the coil and gives a pretty accurate depth of the target.

I took the GTAx 550 to my favorite "detecting spots", local county parks, playgrounds, and of course the beach. Setting up the detector was as simple as turning it on, putting it into discrimination mode and start finding whatever might be in the ground. The GTAx 550 has a great audio signal, easy to hear and especially easy when I hit my first of THREE U.S. Half Dollars! I could hardly believe that with all the detectors working the park, that Half Dollars could be found. I accumulated another four dollars in modern coins before I quit for the day.

My second test was at a popular Florida beach that produced mostly modern coins. Many east coast detectorists work the beaches almost inch by inch, so I felt this would be a good area to see how well the GTAx 550 could perform in a salt-water area. Well, the GTAx 550 surprised me by finding 2 silver dimes at 6-7 inches in salt saturated sand. I did not find too many modern coins and I think that was because this area had truly been hunted out and is being detected just about every single day by locals.

All in all, I am happy to recommend the GTAx 550 to anyone wanting a comfortable easy-to-tune and user friendly detector that can be used for whatever purpose you want. Its great for coins and jewelry, can find relics and working salt water beaches means it can even be used for prospecting. Its a lightweight detector that can be used for many hours without tiring.  Beginners will love this detector, and experienced detectorist (old timers) will find this to be a "fun" detector if they want to get away from the larger, heavier detectors or it would make a great back-up detector if one were needed.
