Rarest of All Texas Civil War Buttons Found in Louisiana - Best of Kellyco Part IV

“My Minelab Advantage metal detector helped me find one of the most rare Texas Civil War buttons ever made.

I got into metal detecting because my wife bought me one for my birthday. 11 years later and I'm still addicted to this great hobby.

My favorite places to hunt are private property and plowed fields. The day that I found this button I was searching a plowed field in the state of Louisiana. I had my Minelab Advantage, which I had been using for over two years by this point, and a shovel to help dig.

After about three hours in this field I got a good signal. It was only 4" down and my hunting partner knew immediately what it was.

The only Texas Unit button ever made, only a few have ever been found. It's a Waco Guards Civil War button, worth anywhere from $2,500.00 to $3,000.00 - but priceless to me! I was simply amazed that I found this rare and special button.

The first person I told was my brother. Please enjoy this picture of the button, which is in very good shape considering it's age and what it's been through.

Cape Cod Beach Delivers 1.74 Carat Diamond Ring - Best of Kellyco Part V

"I got into metal detecting after doing my family genealogy. I found out that I had a Great Uncle who was a gold prospector in Arkansas. In 1927 he was murdered for his fortune, and learning this story got me interested in gold prospecting techniques.

That was four years ago, and since then I've been metal detecting up and down the Eastern United States. One day I was searching a desolate beach in Cape Cod, MA. - just me, a sand scoop and my Whites MXT that I had been using for two years, when I found my best treasure.

I had been out for about a half hour and the beach was really sandy because a storm had just passed. I got a good signal and found, buried about an inch down, a 1.74 carat diamond ring.

I've since had the ring professionally appraised, and found that it's worth about $8,800.00!

My MXT is more than paid for, and I'll be searching this beach again in the future!

Metal Detector Review of the Week - Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II Metal Detector

"The Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II is really easy to use and is light enough that I don't get worn out. I wanted to start finding coins, relics and possibly gold such as rings, watches, bracelets and stuff like that. I purchased my Bounty Hunter about 7 1/2 years ago and have been fairly satisfied with it. I have found quite a few coins and a lot of old beer and soda pull tabs on forty acres that I own and also some old rifle cartridges. I have not found any gold yet, but I'm still looking.

I like the three tone feature that tells me what kind of target I pass over and also how it relates the depth of the item so when I start digging for it I have an idea how far I have to go. It also has a auto discrimination button which saves time and when I know there are a lot of s-tabs in the area that I am searching in that really comes in handy. My Bounty Hunter also lets me know whats in the ground as far as the coins, whether it's a zinc penny , dime, nickel, quarter, half dollar or dollar. If your just starting out in metal detecting don't want to spend a arm and a leg, the Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II is a good unit to start to learn the basics and still get result.

18 x 15" SEF Butterfly Coil - The Field Tests are in... and they're AMAZING!

Finally - The long awaited, all new EXcelerator Symmetric Electro-Magnetic Field (S.E.F.) search coils are now in stock! Field testers have dubbed this new addition the "butterfly coil" due to its unusual shape and they've also reported that it goes deep! The new S.E.F. design is patent protected and has proven to be far superior to many other concentric, "DD" type search coils.

The new S.E.F., or butterfly, EXcelerator coil is designed to offer better, all-around performance when compared to other "DD" coils on the market today. Better ground balancing, more stable operation, more accurate pinpointing and increased target identification are all benefits of this coil.

Field tester Don Echols in Virginia reported finding "35 bullets on a site that produced only 8 in the same amount of time with a different coil." He states: "Several of the bullets were in the 4" to 5" depth range and gave a good sound as well as a good VDI reading" with his White's MXT detector. Don also noted 'The novice or rookie hunter may have a difficult time with this coil, but if they stick with it, I'm sure they can add to their collection."

Taking the coil out with his MXT to a different, more common soil location, Don reported: 'The coil was reaching down at least 10" for tiny bullets and easily getting the larger ones at a foot. The shallow targets sound and read good, but the deep items are inconclusive. To dig, or not to dig, is up to the user - I almost always dig and it pays off."

Treasure Leads of the Week

Mormon Trail Park, Iowa - is off State 189, about two miles southeast of Bridgewater, Adair Co. A segment of the old wagon route used by the Mormons in 1846 on their journey to Utah is preserved in this park. Here they had a camp site and established a temporary medical center of which no traces have survived.

The Ghost Town of Chikaskia, Kansas - is located on the Chikaskia River about six miles north of Caldwell, near the Oklahoma state line. In the same general area are the ghost towns of Alton, Aurellville, Hessel and Rome.
