Highway Treasure: 8 Million Dimes Scattered Across Texas Roadway

Published by Audrey Floyd on 05/01/25

When an 18-wheeler packed with 8 million dimes flipped on Highway 287 near Alvord, Texas, it wasn’t just a traffic mess—it was a full-blown treasure spill.

According to Fox News and The Independent, the crash scattered over $800,000 in loose change across the pavement. Cleanup crews had their hands full—literally—scooping up coins with shovels, vacuums, and gloves as the shoulder of the highway turned into a silver mine.

And while authorities secured the scene, metal detectorists everywhere had one thought: What we wouldn’t give to sweep that roadside.

You don’t see spills like this every day. But it proves a point every serious detectorist knows—treasure can turn up anywhere. Whether it’s a lost coin in a park or a highway loaded with scattered silver, it pays to stay ready.

"I almost came out here with a bucket so I could fill it up with some dimes," said one local. If he had a metal detector, he might’ve gone home with more than just pocket change.
