A Contribution to My City's History

02/21/16

Two weeks ago a buddy and I went out for our usual Saturday hunt, we had only found a few wheats and couple silver dimes. We finally agreed on going to a spot in the woods we had heard had been an old park and had once been land inhabited by the native Americans. We walked about a half mile into the woods and walked off the trails into the thick brush within 15 minutes I got a very strong signal at 6 inches deep, I grabbed my shovel and dug the hole.
[split]
On the second scoop I saw a letter "s" on a metal buckle sticking out of the dirt, I reached in and pulled out a small size US belt buckle! I couldn't believe it, I've seen them in magazines but now I actually have one! I yelled excitedly for my buddy to come look and he couldn't believe it either.

I spent two weeks researching it and took it to my local museum where the curator said it was most likely lost in the 1870s. He also said it was probably due to the tensions the US government had with the native Americans at the time and that's how it may have gotten here. He seemed very impressed that I had found such a historical item metal detecting.

Most likely it will be donated to the museum as it is more important to my city's history than it is to keep in a box! Thanks Minelab for making it all possible and worthwhile!
