Blown Away

02/21/16

I'm new to detecting, I did some research about the best detector to buy and settled on a Minelab X-TERRA 505 after hearing really good things about them.

I'd been raking over a public park near my home for a couple of weeks and had found a lot of 1930's, 1940's coins but not much else and was beginning to think I'd probably exhasted the site, until I found a 9ct gold wedding band, worth about $120 in scrap gold. I was over the moon and this encouraged me to keep detecting on this site.
[split]
A week later I was out again, I'd been detecting all day and was exhausted and decided to dig one last target before going home. I dug it and it was a bottle cap... I didn't want to end the day on a downer, so decided to dig one more 'last target'.

The target was a deep one and with a fairly odd ID. I almost didn't bother I was so tired, but when I'd dug it up it was a copper disc around 4 inches across with a strange pattern cut out of it. I had no idea what it was so consulted a specialist artifact auction house to see if they could help.

This object turned out to be a 'La Tene' style Harness Mount with a 'Triskele' design which dates from 200BC - 100AD!!! I was utterly blown away, I've found something around 2,000 years old and it has been valued at between $473-$788 (£300 - £500) due to it's age and condition.

I'm totally hooked now and I'm saving up to buy the new CTX 3030 - a few more finds like this one and I'll be set.

Thank you Minelab!
