<p><strong>I spend a lot of time with my White’s machines hunting for civil war relics, but it never ceases to amaze me as to how many other nice finds can be had unexpectedly in a civil war site.</strong> One very common find, unrelated to the battles, are newer coins. I've found coins in the middle of huge open fields, far out in the woods, just about anywhere.</p> <p>If a human was there, it’s a good bet they dropped a coin. Though modern clad is always a nice find helping round out a hunt, silver is icing on the cake. I've even found older copper, including Indian Head pennies, large cents and even a George II farthing, but I have NOT been able to break into the 1800's with silver, until today.</p> <p>I was hunting a Confederate campsite in the middle of a cow pasture here near Gettysburg, I was VERY pleased to pull out my first ever 1800's era silver, an 1897 Barber Quarter in very good condition for having been buried for who knows how long. My White’s V3i rang loud and true with a solid, consistent 82vdi with a small pinpoint area giving me no doubt I had a quarter. I expected modern coinage but was tickled to see the glint of silver when I moved away ages of dirt about 6 inches down.</p>
