Great Friends, Great Finds

02/21/16

On May 7th and 8th 2014, myself and my good friend Frank had the great pleasure of hosting the guys from Dirt Fishin' America out of Idaho right here in my home town of Philadelphia Pa. We did 2 long days of detecting, photos, and filming video. On the first day I was able to not only find a first for me, but I was also able to find my oldest US coin. On a Colonial farm site that I have frequented many times, I had an iffy signal that sounded like something good could possibly be down a few inches. Now mind you, this field is full of iron and causes me some issues from time to time.

This was no exception. After digging the hole, and recovering a rusty nail, I re-scanned to now hear a good crisp solid tone. Upon further excavation, I pulled out what I initially thought was going to be a nickel. This was not the case. In fact, I was able to dig my very first half cent, a 1794 Liberty Cap. But even better than that, it is now my oldest US coin. While many other artifacts and coins came out over the 2 days, this was my best find, and my favorite. I can't begin to express how much fun I had hanging out with the guys. I hope we get to do it again here, or maybe I will make a trip out to see them in Idaho some time.
