Kansas Homestead Find
Published by Becky H. on 02/25/19
Recently while detecting with my husband, Brad, and brother-in-law, Brent, on what used to be an old homestead here in Kansas, each of us, on different days had found military pins. From research we knew the name of the family that had previously lived there but did not know of any military background, if any.
My husband Brad returned to the site days later with his White’s V3i and he finds a keychain with several dog tags and keys. After returning home, and with the help of the internet, he was able to find the name and phone number of a relative who lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He called the number and left a message and it wasn't 30 minutes later when the man called back.
He was the oldest nephew of the owner of the lost items we found. He said that his uncle had since past away and that he served in the Korean War.
After talking and getting his address to return the items to him, he also gave us a lot of information about the homestead we were detecting. He said his great grandpa had bought the house that used to be there in 1911. Not only were we able to return the items back to the nearest kin, we also learned the history of the site and made a new friend.
