Finding other people who enjoy metal detecting is a plus. That’s why joining a metal detecting club is number one on our list. Not only will it allow you to make new friends, it’s also the quickest way to figure things out about metal detecting that might take you years to learn on your own. It will also drive your passion for detecting.

#2 – Bigger Doesn’t Mean Better

It’s understandable to think that something is better because it’s bigger. However, it isn’t always true with metal detectors. You’ll likely see other detectorists who have bulky detectors with all the bells and whistles or heavy digging tools. Don’t let it discourage you from using a smaller lightweight detector. Metal detecting requires that you get out and hunt lots of sites. When you have a heavy metal detector or a big shovel, you’ll get tired faster and hunt less.

#3 – Always Have Extra Batteries On-Hand

You may have heard this tip before, but it’s worth hearing again. Always have spare batteries with you on every metal detecting outing. If you haven’t had batteries go dead on a hunting trip yet, you will. Be prepared so you never have to cut a hunt short.

#4 – You Need a Pinpointer

You can find all kinds of equipment and accessories for metal detecting out there, much of which isn’t necessary to have to have successful hunts, but rather is simply a matter of personal preference. #5 – Every Hunt is Different

Just as the sites that you detect are different, so will be your hunting trips. You may have trips where you don’t find great targets after spending hours looking, while you have other trips where you have the Midas touch. Don’t let the unproductive hunts discourage you – your best finds may be just around the corner.

Don’t allow the fact that other detectorists have already searched a site to keep you from looking yourself. If you have ever searched the same site twice and found something on the second go around, then you know that detectorists sometimes miss targets. They also sometimes choose to not dig certain targets because they think it’s a junk signal. You just might find what they missed.

#7 – Always Double Check Your Hole

Whenever you dig a target, you should use your detector or pinpointer to double check the hole. Never assume that you have found all there is to find in a hole. Sometimes, especially with coins, if you find one, there are more there with it.
