My Greatest Discovery By Far

The story starts back at the time when I found the Viking age grave. After that find I was in the local newspaper, and as a result I got a letter from a local landowner that told me that I could go treasure hunting on his land whenever I wanted to.

[split]

So during Easter I was on holiday back in my hometown in the Hardangerfjord, Norway. Ready to attack these new lands I had bought me self a video camera to make detecting videos and to better document my finds.

So I'm out on the new field, well it's not a normal flat field, it's more like a hillside, anyway.

After an hour or two I get a really strong signal. After digging a deep hole, I find out there is something big down there so I have to expand the hole quite a bit.

After removing loose soil I find me self looking at 3 Iron objects, partly hidden underneath two big rocks. I instantly think back to the Viking grave and I am pretty sure this is a find of the same calibre. I can see an object that might be a sword, and something that looks like a scythe, and another lump of Iron.

So I do a bit of recording, carefully cover up the hole and go back home to contact the "county archaeologist". After a quick talk with him he asks me to send him the recording I did.

Two days later he came to visit to inspect the find. After uncovering the find he confirms my suspicion. He is extremely happy for the find I have done.

He did expose a bit more of the grave then I did so we Identified two objects. A sword and a spearhead. Based on the shape of these objects he dates the grave to the period of "Roman Iron Age" 100-400 AD.

We also found some ash and small bits of burned bone in the grave so we didn't take anything up from the grave that day. But the museum will come and do an excavation in near future.

Check out the video that shows the part of the grave we exposed and if you want to see the clip of me finding the grave check out my Youtube Channel; Digging Hardangerfjord.
