I’ve been detecting for many years (since the 80’s ) I had a chance to detect an old ranch while teaching a buddy how to use his detector. A relative of my friend gave us a 1 day permission to detect the grounds which had some old homestead foundations from the late 1800’s. I was told that the original family lived there from the late 1800’s until the 1940’s. After most of the day teaching him how to ground balance his machine and how to swing correctly, we had a pile of square nails and other scrap metal. As we all know, this can be very frustrating especially to a beginner. I watched as he detected inside the foundation of a cellar and told him to take his time and go over the walls also – every inch. With so much “junk” he started getting tired and started rushing through it all. He asked to show him what I meant. I could hear the frustration in his voice so I started showing him how to do the walls, with no results. It was getting late in the day and almost time to leave with only nails and other junk in our pouches. All of a sudden, in a corner, near the bottom of one wall, my Goldmaster 2 screamed. I looked at my friend and he laughed at me and told me to close my mouth because my jaw had just dropped. I knelt down and found a loose rock in the wall and pulled it out. I couldn’t believe what I saw. What I pulled out was fists full of coins dated 1919 to 1928. Now my friend’s mouth just dropped. All I could say to him is “Never give up and check every inch, because you never know what that last inch may give you”. I told him we’d split the finds 3 ways, one portion to me, one to him, and the last to his relative for the chance to detect his property. He is now a firm believer and hooked on metal detecting.
