Treasure find of a lifetime...
02/21/16
A story from the past, as fresh as if it had happened yesterday; I cruise several times each year, and take my Garrett Ace 250 with me on every trip. Traveling the western Caribbean in Nov, 2011 our Tuesday port was Grand Cayman. I was detecting along Seven Mile Beach and was approached by a man who told me his wife had just dropped her engagement ring in the [powdery] sand, while spreading out her towel. They had been searching for 45 minutes with no luck. I raced back down the beach with him and within minutes, the ring was back on her finger. She was crying with relief and gratitude. The husband however, after asking me how deep it was (8+ inches), and he started yelling at his wife "we would have had to get back on that ship and leave a $10,000 ring on this beach..." I told him to calm down, all is well, she has the ring back. Bystanders, suggested he should offer me a reward for such a valuable recovery... as he grudgingly reached for his bag, I told him 'NO... the only reward I need is seeing your wife's happiness."
Now, if the story ended there, it would be excellent in itself, but it doesn't. On Friday, 11-11-11 (which happens to be my birthday, we were in port in Roatan... not many finds, but as the day wound down, I was detecting at the man-made beach at Mahogony Bay without much luck.... until I saw a group of people on their hands and knees on the sand volleyball court several hundred yards inland. I wandered over, and sure enough, the young gal, who was on her honeymoon with a group of 12 family members (!) had lost her diamond ring during play. I gridded off the court and after 2 bottle tops, found her ring. Her groom got on one knee and re-proposed. It was quite beautiful. They offered me a reward, whihc I refused.... but as I left, the girls father chased me down and pressed a $20 bill into my hand with his sincere thanks.
Again, if the story ended there, it could be complete.... BUT, that evening the group of 12 fellow cruisers visited my dining table with a cake that read Happy Birthday and THANK YOU.... The following morning was our day at sea before ending our week; I took my $20 bill and went to play bingo in the large theater with about 400 other cruisers.... and I won the $1,000 jackpot !!! I took $25 of my winnings and went to the casino and entered the Slot Tournament, where I won another $500.
Karma is an amazing thing, and using the power of a metal detector, along with the skills acquired from years of beachcombing, AND with a pure heart reaps its rewards in more ways than just jewelry (although that's pretty good, too!)
