VX3 Finds a King Edward Hammered Silver Penny!
02/21/16

When I pulled onto one of my favorite spots along the Red River in Manitoba, Canada, I had absolutely no idea what a wonderful discovery was waiting for me! While the site is only about 20 acres, I have made some interesting finds including 1850’s Upper Canada tokens, 19th century Canadian/United States coinage and early Georgian copper pennies.

About 30 minutes into the search I received a nice solid signal with a 47 reading on my VX3. After removing my first shovel full of soil I could see a small silver coin in the bottom of the hole and thought it might be a silver Canadian or United States Dime. Picking up the coin, I noticed it was a thin, oddly shaped coin with a king’s head on one side and a cross on the other. It was nothing I had ever seen before and I couldn't wait to get home to research my find.

Imagine my surprise when I determined it was a King Edward hammered silver penny dated from 1307 to 1327! I still wonder how this coin made its way to a Manitoba farm field. Thank you White’s for making this discovery possible.
