Discovering the Gold Dollar

02/21/16

Had a small job this morning close to a place I have been trying to get to all winter but the road was impassable, small mining town in the foot hills lots of iron and few targets. I was hunting in TTF stock coil auto +3 sens was about 15 I had been there about four hours and found nothing but trash and the skeleton key (eyeball find)bent down to move a piece of wire that my coil was hanging up on and noticed a strange shape.

As I wandered aimlessly I was getting a little frustrated at the lack of any good signals I saw a big bone from a wild horse as I got close I got a 12-37 and thought a zinc penny way out here to my surprise it turned out to be a 1915 S wheat penny (in great shape ) about 4 inches deep. I started working around where I found the penny and a foot away on the other side of a little bush I got a really bad signal. In with the iron signals the ground is very soft and dry, here so I just stick my lesch in the ground all around the spot and loosen it up and dig with my hand.

I stick my probe in the hole (also about 4 inches deep) and find a nail so I stand up and wave the coil over the pile and get the high tone I was looking for 5-30. I go back to my knees and move a little dirt on the top of the pile and see a little bit of a gold rim move a little more and I see the side with the dirt and think to my self what the heck is this. Pick it up and turn it over and saw the eagle and five dollar and I knew I had found my first gold coin. Started screaming and shouting and doing the Minelab dance and few others.

I took it to the truck and put it away so as not to scratch it and went back to see if there was any thing else in the area, needless to say I was too excited to hunt any more I was yelling all the way home. Went back to the same spot 4 days later and found a shield nickle and a aluminum token with a 5 inch coil.

I have been surprised many times how well the E-TRAC finds the good stuff in heavy iron and trash.
